Breakfast - lactofree & udi's

I decided on a light breakfast this morning as I want to be able to eat an early dinner and if I have anything to filling now then my stomach will not be able to handle it.

I opted for yoghurt and granola, which is something I use to have on a regular basis before going gf and dairy free, but I have only just found a gf free granola that is also nut free (yes, I am allergic to nuts as well).

I have been using the lactofree range for about a year now and have not had any problems, I am still yet to try their cream and icecream, but their yoghurt and milk have become staples in my diet.

Just the other day I found udi's granola in Asda and was so happy to find, as they call it, a simple granola. No nuts, no fruit, no fuss, although I don't mind granola with raisins!

It tastes great! My only complaint would be that I like my granola when it is clumped up into little ball shaped pieces, which makes it perfect for snacking on. But these are just individual oat grains and it makes it better for a cereal consistency I suppose.

So all I did was just add the granola straight to the yoghurt pot and dug straight in. Quick, simple and easy!

Sunday Breakfast with Genius

This morning I decided that I wanted a double egg and bacon sarnie, actually I was salivating about it last night!

Since I have been gluten free I have tried just about every brand of bread that you can think of but they all have a tendency to crumble at the first bite , unless toasted.  I had been putting off trying Genuis because of the price but one day I ordered a loaf with my Tesco shopping and have not looked back since.  It is very much worth the price when compared to other gluten free breads.

The texture is the same, if not better, than a non gf loaf and I eat the crusts!!  It is moist enough that when I have my egg and bacon sarnie I don't even need to butter the bread, it's amazing!

I have tried the white and the brown loaves however I can only seem to get the white loaf online but I can't complain because the brown is just as good.  I'm yet to try the seeded loaf, but if it is anything like the seeded roll I had from Cafe Nero yesterday then it won't be my cup of tea unfortunately.

Day 10 - 13 - And then there was PAIN

Over the past few days I have stuck to the same gluten option of a sandwich or a roll, I never really got very adventurous because I was too scared of the consequences especially as I had been having indigestion problems daily.

Then on day 12 in the early hours of the morning I felt that pain that I was dreading, I was in agony and just wanted to cry! The pain was back, it took its time but it definitely had to make an appearance.  I really wanted to quit the gluten on that day but the two shops I went in to to get a gluten free sandwich didn't have any or only had egg as an option! I wanted to cry!

Needless to say I ate gluten again and yet again the pain came back in the early hours of day 13 :( the night before my endoscopy! I was going to continue for another week until I had had my MRI scan but feeling this pain there is no way that I am going to continue eating gluten. Even if the tests come back all clear for coeliac and Crohn's, I am NEVER eating gluten again!

Not in a good place with this pain right now but I will overcome it!

Day 8 & 9 - Week 2

Day 8

Day off work today as I'm working a phased return, but as I needed to go to the GP to pick up my fit note and a prescription I also decided to go to my mum's to borrow her back massager/heat pad as my back was still giving me trouble.

So for lunch I bought a meal deal from Tesco, Chicken Ceaser Salad Wrap, crisps and a drink! The food hasn't been so bad but I have been having minor bowel issues, not enough to make me complain but enough to notice a difference.

That was my only meal for the day, by the time I got home it was around 5pm, I had bought two ready meals but really didn't feel hungry enough to have one of them.

Day 9

I was very prepared today, I made my lunch (brown bread roll with chicken slices) and I also filled my thermomug with peppermint tea to take to work.  The tea lasted me at least 2 hours at work and by 2pm I ate my lunch or should I say slowly nibbled on my lunch because an hour later when I was ready to leave I still hadn't finished.

When I got home I decided to wait a while for dinner but also ensured that I had another tea with it, however I don't know whether I was too full or something didn't agree with me but I had indigestion pains all night, I nearly slept.

Not too sure at the moment what is going on but I am thankful that I have not yet experienced a severe reaction to re-introducing gluten.  Hopefully I can stop by next week once the endoscopy is done, but I do have the MRI scan the week after so not sure If I will have to continue until then.

Day 6 & 7 - From bad to worse

Day 6
I was supposed to wake up early today, I had my day planned in my head, but things didn't go to plan and I ended up getting out of bed with only enough time to get ready and get to my hospital appointment at 2:30pm.  So needless to say I had no breakfast (which I don't usually anyway) and no lunch.

I got the bus and half way along my journey the driver decideds that he does not want to go all the way to the final stop and terminates at least 6 bus stops from where I need to be, then when I get on the bus behind I have no cash on my Oyster card  (argh) luckily the driver was nice and let me on as there was quitte a few people that  just got off of the same bus!

With all of that I didn't not have enough time to get anything to eat before my appointment and they had me sitting there so long  I was getting thirsty!  I finally get seen and before I leave the dr says I gotta get a blood test, another long wait!

So when I finally leave I head straight to M&S to get a smoothie and a sandwich, but because I don't like eating outside I still did not eat until like 5:00pm when I got home.

Day 7
Going back to work was weird, I thought it wasn't going to happen because I couldn't get through to my GP and my manager was insisting that I get confirmation that it was ok for me to return to work. But in the end I went in without the confirmation in the hope that my GP.would contact me later that day.

So I get myself ready and leave the house, late, remembering that there is a tube strike but thinking that it would not affect my journey as I was getting the bus anyway. How wrong I was. I get on the bus and about 5 mins up the road I realise I have left my purse at home and have limited funds on my Oyster card, do no detours or picking up some food after work!

Then I end up stuck in traffic, great, I end up being 20 mins late on my first day back. As soon as I get outside the building I just think "why am I back here again?!?"

Anyway food wise, I had to borrow some money and get a chicken wrap, which I didn't realise had cheese in it until I had opened it and was ready to take my first bite, oh well, I ain't anyway as I had no choice.  Now fairy clearly has an instant effect on me as I felt my stomach going wild, this was around 2pm and by the time I got home at approx 4:30pm I was straight in the toilet! I then had some mild cramps throughout the evening but nothing to complain about.

I'm still looking to be a bit more adventurous with the gluten I just need to get to the shop and make a few purchases.

Day 4 & 5 -

Day 4
Have not deviated from the pitta bread as my gluten staple, today I had chicken but could not be bothered with the salad, it has almost become like a chore that I don't want to do this any more.  I'm eating gluten because I have to, just like I have to take medication, it's becoming a boring task that I know I have to do but don't want do.

So I decided to stay up and watch the Super Bowl, coz in the UK it aired at 10:30pm right through to like 03:30am. Now I was not prepared and did not have any snacks or anything, but then I remembered the tub of Celebrations that my sister brought for me back in August '13, which for obvious reasons I could not eat. But hey the rules have been thrown out and I can now eat whatever I want, so I opened the tub and just picked out four chocolates, maltesers x2 and twix x2.

I ate them very slowly throughout the night the last one I had around 10am, oh and I slept on the sofa because I could not keep my eyes open through a game that I did not understand and had no interest in, I just watched because I wanted to see what it would be like.  Anyway, so far I have not had any major symptoms although my back is still hurting, not sure if connected.  Also I have been drinking peppermint tea everyday regardless of whether I have indigestion or not so that could be helping too.

Day 5
I really feeling like letting loose and just getting a few different things to eat, I'm planning to head to Asda tomorrow on my way back from the hospital (haematology appointment) so maybe I will pick up something different, definitely no more pitta bread!!

So no change on what I ate today, had to finish off what I had before I buy anything else, I even had more  chocolates as I didn't feel an effect I of what I had previously.  Is that good or bad? I really don't know but I do need to stop stressing and just utilise this time to eat what I want without any issues coming my way.

In general however I do need to eat more as at the moment I'm still only having like one meal a day, at a push I will have two, depending on the timing. I think a lot of it is to do with my current routine of wake up mid afternoon, move from bed to sofa, watch tv then move from sofa to bed! Not much of a routine is it? So hopefully I can get back to work thus week, if the GP agrees, and start to get myself sorted.

Sorry no pics again, I always forget .

Day 2 & 3 - GLUTEN worries

Day 2
I think I'm going to work myself up in to a frenzy worrying about these symptoms but all I can think about is the pain that I use to endure and that is enough to make me never eat gluten again.

Yesterday was much the same as day 1, I had the same lunch and was more focused on my back pain, so much so that I had to take some painkillers to allow myself to move more freely.  Going to sleep I was a nervous wreck as that is the time I would normally get really bad stomach cramps, I felt a twinge around 2am this morning but it didn't get any worse. Fingers crossed it continues like this but I also hope I am eating just enough gluten so that whatever it is they look for will show up during these procedures.

Day 3
I had to do some shopping as I'm due to go back to work next week and where I am losing weight still none of my clothes fit. So £45 later in Primark I managed to get some essentials but still couldn't find the coat I wanted in New Look so we headed to another branch but before that decided to stop for a late lunch at GBK.

I had a chicken burger (chargrilled) with skinny fries and a sprite, it kinda felt good being able to choose anything I wanted from the menu however I was dreading eating that bun.  But when the food came it did not seem like a lot so I felt a bit calmer about eating it. Nevertheless it took me a lifetime to eat, with every bite I literally had to sit back and chew, it was hard work, the slower I ate the fuller I got but I did well. (Forgot to take pictures) I gave my brother the fries that I had left and I only left 2 mouthfuls of the bun on the plate, I even gave up the remainder of my sprite to my brother as well.

When I got home after 4pm I felt so stuffed, thought I was going to have some indigestion problems, but it passed and I just felt really thirsty.

Although it was not a bad experience the worrying overtook everything, I somehow just need to relax and enjoy these two weeks!
